This past Friday, Oct. 16, Lucero played a great set at XPN's Free At Noon at World Cafe Live.
The Memphis band has managed to find itself in a weird position, playing country music to an audience that has a large percentage of punks in it. Regardless, their show at the World Cafe Live had an interesting mix there, and they still played an amazing set.
The band has been touring with a brass band for their current tour and the effect is really great. When I first heard about it, I couldn't imagine them needing nine people on stage with them. However, every song is drastically improved with them there.
It was a subdued set, with singer Ben Nichols mentioning that they weren't normally up this early in the morning, but they played through a lot of their better songs.
This included “Tears Don't Matter Much,” which had an amazing horn solo by the aforementioned brass band. They also played “Can't Feel a Thing” from their new album 1372 Overton Park, and the title track of 2003's That Much Further West.
They closed their set with the extremely heartfelt “Mom,” and left the stage after only 35 minutes of music.
Regardless of the short set it was a great show. I would strongly suggest seeing them any time they come to Philadelphia (which should be soon, they played three shows in town this year).
Also check out XPN's Free at Noon series. This was my first experience with them and if you have nothing better to do on Friday's, you should really check it out.
