The world famous Cirque du Soleil will be making its way to Philadelphia on Oct. 13 to perform Alegrķa.
Described as a joyful rendezvous with the power and beauty of the human body, Alegrķa sets out to portray just what its translation means: jubilation.
According to the show’s website, power and the handing down of power over time is the backdrop that the characters of Alegrķa play out their lives in front of: “Kings' fools, minstrels, beggars, old aristocrats and children make up its universe, along with the clowns, who alone are able to resist the passing of time and the social transformations that accompany it.”
There are nine different acts that display the talent and abilities of the cast in Alegrķa: the Aerial High bar, contortion, the Fire-Knife dance, the Flying Man, hand balancing, manipulation, Power Track, Russian Bars and Synchronized Trapeze. Each of these acts showcases the imaginative and impressive flexibility of the performers.
The show has reportedly cost more than $3 million to produce, and makes use of darker lighting and music than previous Cirque productions. The soundtrack is currently the best-selling Cirque du Soleil album to date. It went platinum in Canada and has sold over 500,000 copies worldwide.
A 15-year-long tour was retired on Apr. 5 of this year, but after a month long engagement in Dubai, the show was later restaged, and began again in Halifax, Nova Scotia on May 27.
The wonder and beauty of Alegrķa visits Philadelphia from Oct. 13-16 at the Liacouras Center at Temple University.
