Philly Fringe: Love After Death
by Samantha Ronan, Villanova '10

In a small auditorium at 17th and Fitzwater, Evil Eye Arts is taking the run-of-the-mill love story and turning it on its head.

Love After Death may be the first production that Leyla Eraslan and Francesca Lo Basso have staged together but their fresh contribution to this year’s Fringe Festival will not go unnoticed.

Tom (Benjamin McClung) and Janet (Cory Miller) were happily married until—and I am giving nothing away—Janet died. What initially appears to be a new spin on P.S. I Love You quickly changes gears when, rather than simply mourning his wife, Tom maintains a hauntingly close relationship with her ghost.

Janet is physically on stage throughout the play, coaching her couch potato husband on how to live a normal life and even helping him move towards dating again. In an interesting decision by Eraslan, Janet is able to shove Tom, pick out his clothes and even embrace him; in being so physically present, Love After Death’s ghost is all the more haunting.

In speaking to Eraslan after the Sept. 4 opening night performance, she explained that her inspiration arose from a dream she had years ago. After forming the story itself for a script writing class in college she teamed up with “creative soul-mate” Lo Basso, producing an experimental multimedia performance, complete with projected flashbacks, believable characters and witty, poignant writing.

Love After Death is paired with an art installment entitled “Turnstyle #2” inspired by the play. In combining everyday objects, music, photographs and projectors, producers Michelle Freeman and Meredith Edlow (with artists Ted Abrams, Tony Ward, Bill Kelly and Victor Kroll) have used the space as a canvas to portray love and loss.

According to Freeman, the installment will feature more elements and music during this weekend’s performances, so be sure to take a peek.

Love After Death will be performed Sept.10 and 11 at 7 p.m. and Sept. 12 at 2 p.m. at the Marian Anderson Rec Center at 17th and Fitzwater sts.

Though admission is free, a $10 donation is suggested.
