For anyone who has yet to understand the recent break up between Philadelphia Film Festival and TLA owner Ray Murray (CineFest) and the Philadelphia Film Society (FilmFest), you may be a little late. On Tuesday Feb. 24, both sides reconciled and will now be coordinating the annual Philadelphia Film Festival together.
“Our only goal during these negotiations with the Film Society was to present a quality festival to the city of Philadelphia,” Ray Murray, President of TLA Entertainment Group and CineFest Artistic Director said in a press release sent out Tuesday. “This combined production guarantees that CineFest is an incredible event unmarred by any other problems.”
The festival now entitled Philadelphia Film Fest/CineFest ’09 will begin March 26 and end April 6. The event will feature 250 documentary, experimental, short and feature films from 45 different countries.
It is truly an example of the “brotherly love” for the city of Philadelphia after what seemed to be a media outcry against the feud.
“City Paper’s” “the Clog” said Ray Murray of Cinefest had “taken his ball…[and] gone home.” “Philebrity” called both TLA and Philly Film Society “a howling embarrassment to [the] city.”
Now, however, there is so much work to be done before March 26 that both sides have time to do little but collaborate. Reports say that the team is working together again as if the ongoing arguments, which had seemed to be leading to a court battle, had never occurred.
“We are thrilled that we are able to work together with Ray and TLA to produce this year’s Philadelphia Film Festival,” J. Andrew Greenblatt, boss of Philadelphia Film Society (PFF) said in the press release sent out last Tuesday.
“Throughout the negotiation process, it was PFS’ desire to deliver to our members and to Philadelphia the festival it deserves. This agreement enables us to fulfill that promise while also advancing PFS’ mission of providing Philadelphia with year-round film programming.”
