Will Blog for the Job
by Andy Stettler Cabrini '09

Believe it or not, in the professional world employers are more likely to hire a well-qualified applicant with a personality than one who remains strictly professional. One of the best ways to show your personality, creativity and personal projects is through the new writing trend; the blogosphere.

Blogs are one of the best social networking tools you can use in the application process. When emailing an employer your cover letter or your thank you note written prior or post interview, a great idea is to send a link to your blog.

Reading someone’s blog is like getting to know a person from the inside out. Maybe you have sent the employer your resume listing your experience and skills. Maybe you have showed them your portfolio. Okay. Now the employer knows what kind of worker you are. But a blog will let the employer know who you are.

Blogging networks like “Blogger” are easy to use and set up. I recommend it if this is your first time blogging and you just want to sign-up and go before that train of thought leaves your head.

“WordPress” is another blogging network much like Blogger except with a touch of professionalism. Bloggers using WordPress tend to write more along the lines of columnists. On the sites homepages, readers will see a list of “Right Now in Tags,” listing categories like art, education, food, humor, music and politics.

Between the blog posts and the reaction comments, in some cases, WordPress and networks like it may take the place of a newspaper. As a journalist, I use WordPress for that very reason. It is the easiest site to practice the part of “The New York Times” columnist Nick Kristof or Daniel Franklin, editor of “The Economist.”

However, if you are looking for a blog network that can take you the extra mile, beyond the realms of blogging, check out “OnSugar.” OnSugar is not just a blog. Users can also post polls, quizzes, photo galleries and more. The only issue that I have with this site is that it seems a bit feminine at times.

A lot of the blogging done on this site seems to center around fashion and foods. This is okay however, I would be careful about what you post here if you are going to send the link to your employer. I would say that where WordPress seems like the “Facebook” of blogging, OnSugar seems more like a “MySpace.”

The site is littered with pink icons, attractive to a younger eye and there are just so many extra options like quizzes and polls, that the site can at times seem scattered. However, this of course, depends on the blogger’s design of his or her page. The default pink can be removed.

The great thing about blogging is that most sites will allow the option of linking your blog to other networking sites like “Twitter” and “Linkedin.” Twitter will post a tweet every time that user updates their blog and Linkedin will simply post the blog onto your user page. Genius!

Another tech-feature is that Blogger and Wordpress have their own mobile applications. Bloggers can now blog on trains, planes and automobiles, save their post and then when an Internet connection is made, the post will automatically be sent to your blog. The blog will then appear on your Twitter and your Linkedin and if your employer is connected to you through these other networking sites; they can then stay up-to-date on what you are doing.

By the time, your employer actually realizes how advanced you are, how connected you are to the social networking community, they will not be able to turn you away. Anyone this advanced in the job market must have the skills to succeed.

Blogging is just one more way to get ahead of the curve.
