Free Library's Author Series
by Chris Banks, Temple '10

Into books? Need something to do this fall? Then look no further than The Free Library of Philadelphia and its fall series of author events.

In the next couple of months, authors from all backgrounds are making appearances, and there's sure to be something for everyone. Listed here are some of the highlights in the fall schedule.

Jeffrey Ross

(September 17)

You may have seen Ross on one of Comedy Central's roasts, so it's fitting that his new book is entitled "I Only Roast the Ones I Love." The book focuses on his own experiences with roasting, along with stories from his own life as a stand up comic. He is the only comic appearing at the Free Library this fall, so this is one event to definitely attend.

Ralph Nader

(September 22)

One of the foremost activists for consumer safety, not to mention a former candidate for President of the United States, Ralph Nader is appearing to promote his book, entitled "Only the Super Rich Can Save Us!" This is his first novel, which imagines a world where the rich actively try to help those who are underprivileged while trying to rid the government of corruption.

Marjane Satrapi

(September 23)

Marjane Satrapi is the author of the graphic novels "Persepolis" and "Persepolis 2," both of which were turned into an Academy Award nominated film in 2007. She also has penned several children's books, and has contributed to the New York Times.

Howard Dean

(September 24)

The third politician appearing this fall (after Tom Ridge and Ralph Nader), Howard Dean is the former chairman of the Democratic Party and the former Governor of Vermont. He is appearing at the Free Library in support of his new book on the current hot button issue of health care reform, entitled "Howard Dean's Prescription for Real Health Care Reform."

Cesar Millan

(October 5)

Host of the show "Dog Whisperer" on the Discovery Channel, Millan is also a best selling author with his first book, "Cesar's Way: The Natural, Everyday Guide to Understanding and Correcting Common Dog Problems." His appearance at the Philadelphia Free Library is in support of his yet to be released book entitled, "How to Raise the Perfect Dog: Through Puppyhood and Beyond."

Eoin Colfer

(October 19)

Colfer is primarily known for writing the Artemis Fowl series, which has sold millions of copies worldwide, and has often been compared to J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series. Currently, Colfer has been comissioned by Douglas Adams' widow to write the sixth installment of the "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" trilogy. The book is entitled "And Another Thing..." and is set to be released a week prior to this event on the 30th anniversary of the first book in the series.

Richard Dawkins

(October 22)

Perhaps the world's most popular evolutionary biologist and atheist, Richard Dawkins is coming to Philadelphia in support of his new book, "The Greatest Show on Earth: Evidence for Evolution." Dawkins is also a former professor at Oxford University, and is considered one of the foremost British intellectuals.

Jonathan Safran Foer

(November 10)

One of the better writers of the new millenium, Jonathan Safran Foer wrote the acclaimed novel turned film, "Everything is Illuminated," followed by a book that bravely took on the events of 9/11 entitled "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close." This time around, Foer is coming to Philadelphia in support of his first non-fiction book, entitled "Eating Animals," which will be released on Nov. 2.

These are just the highlights of the Authors Series for this fall, and I urge you to go to the Free Library's website to find out more information.

Many of the events are free, while others are typically $14, and then $7 for students.
