DesignPhiladelphia 2009
by Chris Banks, Temple '10

Beginning Oct. 7, DesignPhiladelphia is bringing you more than 100 design oriented events, featuring over 500 designers. If you're interested in making a career out of design, or just think it's kind of cool, there's sure to be something for you to check out.

This year’s events begin with the DesignPhiladelphia Kick-Off event on Oct 7. Located at The Welcome House at Love Park, this event will exhibit of local, national and international designer furniture.

The following day, Oct. 8, at Drexel University’s Bossone Center (3128 Market St.) will be a design oriented film double feature. The first is Milton Glaser: To Inform and Delight, and second is Visual Acoustics: The Modernism of Julius Shulman. Both of these films focus on seminal designers and what they have done for the industry. This is definitely a don’t miss for aspiring designers.

On Oct. 11 is an event called SO RE FA, or Socially Responsible Fashion. The event is a full fashion show featuring earth friendly materials, typically made out of recyclable items.

That following Tuesday, Oct. 13, Ignite Philly will take place at Johnny Brenda’s (1201 N. Frankford Ave.) IP features a set of speakers that seem designated to those with short attention spans. Each speaker will be onstage for 5 minutes total, and have a limit of 20 slides.

Finally, one of the more exciting exhibitions is “Bicycle: People + Ideas in Motion.” Running through the entirety of DesignPhiladelphia and taking place at Moore College, this event focuses on the positive ideas and uses of bicycles as a whole.

If you have any aspirations of designing, you have no reason to miss this event. You probably won’t see a better time to mingle with as many industry insiders as you will here. DesignPhiladelphia 2009 is a great resource for college students, whether you are a first year or a graduating senior, so be sure to check it out.

The majority of events are free, but some do require pre-registration. DesignPhiladelphia 2009 runs from Oct. 7 through the 13.
