Okay all you college music artists; it’s time to step it up a notch.
College is the first step to your last chance at making it in the music business and if you want to be heard, then you have to get your material out to the public.
If you’re like me you love to write songs but you are just so busy that it seems impossible to find the time to prepare, let alone play, an open mic or show of any kind. But that’s okay, because I am about to tell you about a way that you can still market yourself to your college campus and the rest of the world.
It’s called convergence. Today newspapers all around the country, are finding that print is no longer the most successful way to get the message out to an audience. In fact, video, sound slides and audio are the components attracting broader ranges of audiences, while providing another layer to stories posted on media websites.
So how does this tie into music? The ultimate goal or dream of any music artist is that fans will flock and obsess over your music. If you really want an audience of die-hard fans, people who will analyze your work and take you seriously, then you have to add different layers to your music.
To do that, I say, become a convergence musician. This means that you should make a stylistic blog on Wordpress.com, OnSugar.com or Blogger and begin posting not only songs, but video recordings of yourself playing these songs. Add a few lines under each post saying either the idea of the song or what it took to inspire the creation of that piece.
It works! Post songs, videos, photos, written pieces like poems and then keep posting your link to your Twitter or Facebook status. You will find that people actually are interested in what you are bringing to the table.
After you have done all of this, begin challenging yourself. Ask for people to post comments to your pieces, ask questions on your posts like, “do you agree with this lyric….?” You will find that people really do respond, especially college students who often have a lot to say but keep it to themselves.
Make a banner-photo to the site that evokes the image you want to portray. Are you an intellectual, or a sex symbol? The colors, images, and sounds that you apply to your blog will overall affect the outcome of how your audience will receive your pieces.
I can’t stress enough the importance of going beyond just audio tracks. Add photos to your songs. Ask a friend to take hundred of photos while you play a few songs and then just pick the best of the batch. Then put them together so that they go along with the song. You will love the outcome, I promise.
