Anticipation is over: Killzone 2
by Eric Povish, Cabrini '10

Guerilla Games most recent release, Killzone 2, has been highly anticipated by gamers around the world since the infamous trailer shown at E3 2005. The trailer showed pre-rendered images on par with the latest Paxar movie and shocked fans and critics around the world. For years many have said that the actual game would not meet those expectations. Boy, where they wrong. So wrong.

Following the events of Killzone on the Playstation 2 and Killzone Liberation for the Playstation Portable, Killzone 2 picks up with the ISA launching an invasion on Helgast, the games antagonist’s home planet.

The first thing to notice in this game is its graphics. This game is beautiful and is one of the greatest looking games yet. The developers spent a lot of time focusing on realism in the game. Every movement in the game as a certain weighted feel that is realistic in the sense that a real soldier is going to being carrying a lot of weight on the battle field.

Character animations in this game are like nothing seen before in a game, everything from vaulting over an object for cover to reloading your weapon. Tiny details like this are what really give the game that immersive feel.

Also something new in a first person shooter is the cover system. The game forces you to think before you shoot, because in order to survive you must take cover. By simply holding down on the L2 button, your character will stick to the wall and from there you can peak out to your to enemy for a few quick burst of gun fire.

Killzone 2’s single player campaign, although good, has its shortcomings.

For starter’s, when compared to other games, there is no real emotional connection to the characters. So when something happens to them you just don’t get upset as much as you would want to. Also the single player story last roughly only eight to 10 hours. However, for those that like to have 100 percent completions, there are plenty of trophies to collect and hidden in-game items to collect.

Killzone 2’s multiplayer is in-depth and good. It has very detailed class and ranking system. After leveling up in a certain class, you are given perks to use in game. For example, as a sniper you can stealthily walk around the map and be invisible to your enemy. Also Medics have the ability to revive fallen teammates. These classes, along with the games stellar graphics, game play and realism is what sets it apart from it the competition.

Aside from it’s few forgivable faults, this game is very enjoyable and one not to miss. For any Playstation 3 owner this is a must have title that hopefully will finally show the world what the Playstation 3 is capable of, because this game looks amazing, but we haven’t seen anything yet.
