From Sept. 4 – 19, The Painted Bride will host the Off The Grid Theater Festival as part of the Philly Fringe Festival.
Created by Thaddeus Phillips and Tatiana Mallarino—co-artistic directors of Lucidity Suitcase International—the festival is made up of theater works powered entirely by renewable energy without sacrificing the quality and inventiveness of each work.
According to their web site, Off The Grid “challenges artists to work within new materials and expand the creative potential of alternative & renewable energy use in the theater, while it challenges audience members to look at performance in an entirely new way and experience how much can be done with very little.”
Throughout the span of the festival, performances will be made by Lucidity Suitcase International, Miro Dance Theater, New York based magician Steve Cuiffo and a concert by The Mural & The Mint.
An interesting aspect of the festival is the fact that each work will be powered by a different source.
Microworld(s) Part #1 (Lucidity Suitcase International) will be powered by a Weza Foot Pump Generator, Digital Effect (Steve Cuiffo) will be powered by solar panels, Generate. Degenerate. (Miro Dance Theater) will be powered by a bicycle and The Mural & The Mint concert will be powered by solar panels, a bicycle and a Weza Foot Pump Generator.
Another interesting aspect of this festival is that it is the first of its kind in the United States. The fact that performers in Philly are pushing new ideas and concepts to take on climate change and the economic crisis is exciting for the city.
