Philly Student Film Festival Preview
by Ashley Campbell Temple '09

The Greater Philadelphia Student Film Festival or GPSFF is coming to theaters on Friday, March 27 at 7 p.m. The Levitt Auditorium is playing host to the awards ceremony and will screen the top three films in each category.

Four to five finalists were chosen for each of the five categories – animation, comedy, documentary, drama and experimental. First through third place positions will be chosen in each category and the winner of the entire Festival will receive $1750 worth of film equipment rentals from Philly HVX.

According to the Greater Philadelphia Student Film Festival website, it was founded in 2006 and has brought together film students from across the area to share the films they’ve written, produced and directed.

The website also states that the Festival recognized Philadelphia as a middle between all of the other film festivals that surround the area but don’t necessarily recognize it.

GPSFF has also created a Craigslist for student filmmakers called GPSFF Connect where they can search for a crew and actors and help to promote their own films.

“GPSFF seeks to forge lasting connections between the city and its brightest up-and-coming talent as an investment in the future of Philadelphia filmmaking,” says the Festival’s website. According GPSFF’s official website, the festival received a record-breaking 130 film entries this year.

“In all honesty, this year's overall pool of submissions was the strongest ever. It always hurts when we have to cut some really excellent films,” said GPSFF directors Yanik and Abhi in their blog, “We've taken extra steps this year to make this process as fair and equitable as possible.”

Make sure you mark your calendars so see the work of some of Philadelphia’s best student filmmakers! Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 the day of the event. Qdoba is providing free burritos!
