Laid Off? How to Cope
by Brittany McLeod, Cabrini '09

Recently fired from a job?

You’re not alone. There are many of us who aren’t currently employed.

But don’t let the dreadful state of the job market get you down. There are plenty of opportunities you can take advantage of to help you get off the couch and back into the cubicle.

Depending on your situation, it’s always best to bow out gracefully from your old job if you’re fired or laid off.

It’s important to remember it’s all about who you know, so that boss of yours from Chili’s that you told to shove it may know someone that could have helped you nab that dream job of yours.

Don’t burn your bridges! It may not always be the case, but it’s worth it to keep a good contact or reference for the future.

Sometimes monster.com and careerbuilder.com can become an endless spiral of spam and duplicates, which can lead you to give up on your job search.

However, since the city is overflowing with young professionals, there are countless networking events in Philadelphia that can benefit you and your search for an income.

Upcomingevents.com offers an endless list of events in and around the city and South Jersey that allow people to connect and find potential employers and priceless contacts.

These events are so beneficial and the setting is comfortable, so it doesn’t feel like a job interview. Usually you can find a guest list to sign-up for as well. While you don’t have money flowing in from a job, you can afford to attend these events.

It’s also important to keep in mind that while you are searching for a job to try and keep an open mind.

In today’s ever-fluctuating job market, it’s going to be difficult to find the perfect position for you. So for now, take anything you can get.

While you may not be happy, you’re paying the bills. This will build your employment history and fill any gaps on your resume that prospective employers will look at. While you pick up some hours at Sports Authority, you can keep looking for that job in Physical Therapy.

Remember that especially today it is not uncommon to be let go from your job and you can handle your departure professionally. It’s best to explore your options and take advantage of anything that comes your way. Keep your head up and keep looking because you never know what you could find.
