There are a lot of sports out there that call for aggression and fearless enthusiasm.
While many of these sports are dominated by men, there is one sport out there that gives women the chance to show what they’ve got—roller derby.
Not exactly sure what roller derby is?
It’s an American-invented sport that involves roller-skating around an oval track. Physical contact is involved and while men can play, it is typically a female dominated sport.
Many cities around the United Cities have their own roller derby teams and Philadelphia is lucky enough to have a league of their own.
The Philly Roller Girls kicked off their fourth season this past February with the Warrior Cup Championship at the 23rd Street Armory in downtown Philly.
A part of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), the Philly Roller Girls is skater-owned and operated all-girl roller derby league that is comprised of three teams: the Broad Street Butchers, Heavy Metal Hookers and Philthy Britches.
The league also has a travel team, the Liberty Belles, which will travel to Chicago, Ill. this weekend to take on the Windy City Rollers all-stars.
Throughout the next coming months, the team will also travel to Baltimore, Md. And Raleigh, N.C.
In November, the Philadelphia Convention Center will host the 2009 WFTDA Nationals Tournament where the top three teams from the East, West, North Central and South Central will compete for top honors.
